For the first time in the fifteen-year history of the Reuters Institute Digital News Report, social media and video networks overtook news organisations' own websites and apps as the most widely used way of accessing news globally. 54% of all respondents across 48 markets now get news through social media and video networks, compared to 51% through publisher-owned websites and apps, according to the Reuters Institute 2026 Digital News Report published by the University of Oxford.

That milestone sits alongside a more specific shift. 10% of people globally now use AI chatbots for news, up from 7% the year before. In South Korea and Greece, AI chatbot use for news doubled in a single year. Among people under 35, the figure is 16%. The numbers are still small in absolute terms but the trajectory and the demographic skew are clear.

The combination of these two shifts, more people accessing news through intermediary platforms and a growing number using AI chatbots that summarise rather than link, is changing not just where people get information but how much of the original source they engage with.

What 33% fewer referrals means in practice

As consumption shifts toward the platforms where trust is lowest, the overall trust number declines mechanically even if trust in individual news brands holds steady.

The Reuters Institute describes this as an apparent paradox: there is continued change in news consumption in favour of social media, video networks, and AI, while at the same time concerns about trust in news, about misinformation, and about the wider impact of these platforms are all increasing. People are moving toward sources they trust less because those sources are more convenient. Convenience is winning the argument against confidence.

What AI chatbot users are actually doing

The Reuters Institute's data on AI chatbot news users reveals something specific about who these people are and what they want. 38% of AI chatbot news users fall into the "news lover" segment, compared to 22% of respondents overall. They are characterised by the intensity and breadth of their news consumption, being far more likely to access multiple outlets, use a range of platforms, and actively seek information rather than encountering it passively.

The most popular feature of AI chatbots for news, cited by 42% of respondents, is the ability to ask follow-up questions. This is not people looking for shortcuts. It is people looking for depth. The chatbot serves as a synthesis and explanation layer, not a replacement for interest in the underlying story.

But click-through tells a different story about what actually happens after the summary. 42% of AI chatbot news users say they always or often click through to original sources. That means 58% do not. The AI answer is the endpoint for the majority of the interaction, even among users who are more interested in news than the general population.

The generation that never started

The Reuters Institute data on younger audiences documents something that goes beyond a preference shift. 56% of people aged 18 to 24 who did not read a newspaper in the last week report they have never read one regularly. For television news the figure is 21%. These are not lapsed readers or viewers. They are people who never formed the habit in the first place.

52% of respondents aged 18 to 24 now say that social media, video networks, and AI chatbots are their main way of getting news. That is 32 percentage points more than the next most popular main source. The proportion of people only using social media and video networks for news doubled from 6% in 2020 to 12% in 2026. Many of these individuals are, in the report's framing, withdrawing from getting news in a variety of different ways and relying instead on seeing news occasionally when doing other things online.

Interest in news has fallen 13 percentage points since 2021, from 59% to 46% of people saying they are extremely or very interested. A quarter of respondents are now casual or passive news users who typically consume news once a week and say they have little to no interest in it, up from 16% in 2021. Concerns about fake news rose to 62% globally, up 4 percentage points, with jumps of more than 5 points in 11 markets.

The compression that changes what people know

The structural consequence of these simultaneous shifts is a compression of how information reaches people. A piece of original reporting or research gets published. An AI system reads it. A user asks a question. The AI returns a summary. The summary contains the finding but not the methodology, the caveats, the competing evidence, or the context that the original author included because they matter. The user receives the answer. They do not receive the reasoning.

For most questions this compression is harmless or even beneficial. A person who asks "what time does this store close" does not need the full context. But for questions where nuance matters, where the answer depends on who measured what, how they measured it, and what they acknowledged they could not measure, the compression changes what people end up knowing.

The Reuters Institute identifies this dynamic precisely: trust in AI chatbot answers about news sits at 20%, the lowest trust level of any news source measured. People are consuming information from a source they trust less than any alternative, because that source is the most convenient to access. The information arrives faster, in a more digestible format, stripped of the context that would help the reader evaluate whether to believe it.
